Morning snacks - what can your child eat?

6 September 2024 (by admin)

Dear Parents,

This week there has been some confusion around foods appropriate to eat during morning snack time.
As our food from home policy states: At morning break times our pupils are allowed to consume fresh and dried fruit, rice cakes (not chocolate or caramel covered), crackers and cheese, vegetables (e.g. carrots sticks, cucumber, tomatoes etc.) and plain water.
Examples of foods and drinks not allowed are crisps, biscuits, cereal bars, fizzy drinks, juice and flavoured water.

We always advise children to have one healthy snack at break time. This is because they only get a 15-minute playtime at 10am (Years 1-6), and if they spend the whole playtime sitting eating, they are not getting the opportunity to run around and play or go to the toilet. If you are concerned that your child may become hungry, or they are fussy with school dinners, then you are welcome to bring in additional healthy snacks which they can consume in the lunch hall, at lunchtime if they are still hungry after eating their main lunch item.

A reminder that all children in Reception, Years 1 and 2 are provided with fruit each day, if they wish to eat it, for morning break time. This national fruit scheme ensures a healthy snack is eaten at school and additionally, there is a cost saving to families who chose not to bring a snack in from home.

If you would like to read in full the 'Food From Home' policy, click on the link below and select the policy from the policy list.

We hope this message is helpful, particularly to our parents in Year 1, as we do understand the transition from Early Years to Key Stage One is a big change in many areas of school life for not only the children, but for you as parents too.

With kind regards,

Coopersale and Theydon Garnon C.E. Primary School
